I said on the show, that T2: Trainspotting, is one of the most perfect things I've ever seen and I stand by that completely.
Danny Boyle, has basically given us all a gift, that will be with us forever - I watched the movie before last weeks show and still had a knot in my stomach hours later, because I loved it that much.
I think the fact that I know the first film, inside out, upside down, back to front, word for word, etc. Meant that this could have swung either way - I would have loved it regardless of it being a pile of shit or I would have hated it because it did the first film no justice.
Thankfully neither of those applied - I loved it, because it is just that good.
The story picks up 20 years after the end of the first film and almost everyone makes a welcome return, which is rare in sequels. Everyone has aged beautifully and acting skills have vastly improved, where necessary.
The story is one of friendship and revenge, played out in signature slightly trippy Danny Boyle style. The imagery he uses is dazzling and thought provoking and the cinematography, with it's sweeping shots of beautiful Edinburgh, will make you want to move there, immediately.
I think the fact that twenty years had lapsed, all the main cast returned, John Hodge wrote the screenplay again and with Danny Boyle at the helm, all meant that this was never going to be a disappointment. All these people have the first film inside them, as part of their make up as human beings, they were all young and soaking it all into their souls, when the first film was made, meaning they did this with pure love and total partiality. They could rouse the part of them that IS Trainspotting and throw it all into this absolute corker of a film.
All the lead cast slipped effortlessly back into their characters and the chemistry between them, remained exactly the same. The first film was referenced in subtle ways that won't make you wince in the slightest, it will just give you an odd sense of pride.
The film nostalgic, funny, sophisticated, violent, melancholy and beautifully dreamy, with an original score and soundtrack, that will make your gut tighten and your face beam.
By the end of it, I felt like my throat was closing from the nostalgia - it wasn't cheesy overload though, if anything, I wanted more.
You definitely don't have to have seen the first film to enjoy this as an entertaining piece of cinema, but if you have seen the first film and delight in it the way I do, and indeed my generation does, then this will be an emotional experience you won't forget.
