Obsession number 5826, has revealed itself.
People who know me well, know that I get this kind of locked on obsession with certain actors and unless they're River Phoenix or John Cusack, these obsessions give way to the next one quite quickly, but each and every fixation that takes hold of me, will always stay with me, in a corner of my mind/heart/canvas print collection/DVD hoard.
It only takes something small or a snippet of a performance to pique my interest - in fact its ususally someone who is in a supporting role and they manage to take my eyes away from the star.
That ability intrigues me and always stirs that not so dorment stalker gene in me, along with a tinge of envy and regret that my performing arts training remains wasted. I then have to channel these feelings into a mass bingeing spree and watch every tiny little piece of work they may have been involved with.
This is the reason I have seen hundreds of random little hidden gems that no ones bloody heard of! I LOVE doing this, in fact I had a conversation on the show a few weeks ago about finding someone who lights a fire in you and needing, not wanting, needing, to get every piece of them you possibly can and this resulting in the realisation that this person is so multi faceted/multi talented, its actually slightly painful.
Well, the subject of my latest psycho episode is, Emory Cohen.
He first turned my head in The Place Beyond the Pines - anyone who can take my attention away from Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper, especially Ryan Gosling with that bleached hair and all those tattoos, is worthy of my time and interest, in my opinion.
He stuck out like a sore thumb in that film but in the most exquisite way. He pouted and fought and shouted and cried his way through it with this truly luscious, overly pronounced, Long Island street kid accent - it was jarring because no one else speaks like that in the whole movie, but I love a performance that jostles you, something out of the ordinary is always welcome.
Even though I had all these thoughts about him during that film, it didn't trigger a stalking episode becuase I thought to myself, any actor worth their salt can play a complete bastard convincingly, so yes he caught my eye, but not enough to make me obsess about it.
That was until I saw, Brooklyn. Oh my, what an adoreable and bewitching film.
He was so wonderfully charming and incdredibly sweet and innocent in it, absolutely worlds apart from the evil little shit bag he played in The Place Beyond the Pines, I just got lost in him, from the moment I saw that familiar pout, and the nervous smile when he talks and it sent me into stalker overdrive.
I'm still going through his filmography and I will be posting about any remarkable finds.
I also know that he has a little TV show (you may have heard of it :-)) on Netflix at the moment, so I'll be giving that a binge very soon.
In the mean time PLEASE watch Brooklyn, its just so gorgeous and if you havent seen The Place Beyond the Pines, why are you even reading a movie blog??? ha ha
