Anyone who listened to the show will know that I didn't particularly like this film - I think my exact words were 'It was fucking atrocious' and on reflection, I don't think that's fair.
In terms of formulaic, cheap thrills, low budget, teen horror, this can hold its own. It scared me, so I suppose it had the desired effect. But then everything creeps me out - I still leave a light on when Lee is on nights ha ha
The Bye Bye Man is a 2017 American Horror/Thriller directed by Stacy Title and written by Jonathan Penner. The screenplay is an adaptation of the chapter "The Bridge to Body Island" in a book called, The President's Vampire.
Like I said, its not a terrible film as in 'Battlefield Earth' terms, but its not a masterpiece either - probably due to budget constraints, rather than laziness.
It's your typical, teens move into a creepy old house and weird things start to happen and one by one they are maimed or killed until one of them saves the day, type of movie.
I do enjoy movies that have roots in urban legend and 'The Bye Bye Man' as a character is at least an original idea. The actual embodiment of him on film however, was cringey and the skinless CGI hound he had with him, was laugh out loud funny because it was SO BAD!
He reminded me of The Gatekeeper, from that 90's VHS board game, called Atmosfear (I'm showing every one of my 34 years now) and I think that's why I couldn't take him seriously, in that cheap cloak. I expected him to start screaming 'IIIII AAAAM THE GATEKEEEPPERRRRR' at any moment.
Anyway, the script was average, acting average, score average. The film was average.
The cast however, was not average, there was an appearance from Faye Dunaway and even Leigh Whannel graced us with his presence on screen! Such a treat.
AND Doug Jones who played The faun in Pan's Labyrinth!!!
With a cast like that I had high hopes but they were not fulfilled.
I'm bored of writing about this average film now, so I will just say this - watch it, if there's no paint drying in your house.
