I love Horror, its my favourite genre by far. There's something about being shit scared and the adrenaline rush that brings - I actually crave that feeling and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. I definitely regret it once I'm in bed on my own in the dark but whatever.
As its my holy month and Halloween is fast approaching, I thought I would cobble together a little list of 10 of my favourite horror movies - not necessarily the best in the world but definitely ones I have watched more times that can possibly be healthy.
I say cobble together because I literally just made this list off the top of my head, in about 30 seconds.
I do have a number one favourite, so I'll start with that but the rest are definitely in no particular order.
Fright Night - 1985
This is my all time number one, I think solely because it was the first horror movie I ever watched and I was really, really young! So I have had most of my life to watch it over and over again. I have no idea why or how I came to own this at such a young age but up until about 10 years ago, I had a battered old VHS copy recorded from the TV. It's vampires before they were romanticised and 80's sfx at their finest - whats not to like?
Halloween - 2007
Lets face it, John Carpenter's Halloween is not scary anymore, its old and tired which is a crying shame but in 2007 it was Rob Zombie'd in the most glorious fashion. He is one sick fuck and I LOVE HIM.
Candyman
Ahhh, my favourite movie as a teenager. That plinky plunky piano score makes my blood run cold just thinking about it. Movies born from urban legend are usually just really stupid but this one genuinely still scares the shit out of me and I think that is mainly because Bernard Rose managed to achieve the perfect mix of that beautifully exhausting tension and some really stomach churning gore.
Evil Dead - 2013
SO. MUCH. BLOOD. Jane Levy deserves some kind of award for 'Most shit taken whilst filming' she really gets put through the wringer but she is unflinching throughout. God bless her. Obviously I have space in my heart for the original but this version just makes me beam.
Braindead (Dead Alive)
ALL. THE. BLOOD. This movie is so much fun and its another one that I remember watching from a really young age (what the hell were my parents thinking ha ha) its hands down the goriest film I have ever seen and if you have guts of steel like me, then you will laugh your arse off at this movie. The fact that it is Peter Jackson made makes it even funnier, considering the legend he has now become and the masterpieces he has blessed us with. I actually count this as one.
Pet Sematary 2
You're probably wondering why I picked number two instead of the original and that is simply because I am deathly afraid of Zelda. I will watch anything that is put in front of me but I refuse to look at her or listen to her, ever again. This movie is not very good to be honest but I still know every word to it, I love it that much.
Hellraiser
What used to actually really scare me has now turned into a movie with so much sentimental attachment that I find comfort and happiness in it - that sounds so weird I know. Me and one of my dearest male friends really bonded and formed a wonderful friendship purely because of this movie and how bad it is and how highly quotable it remains to be. We even write quotes in our birthday cards to each other - losers.
House on Haunted Hill
This is such a fun movie to watch, its so cartoon-ish and farcical at times, I just really enjoy it.
Insidious
This movie was the first time I physically jumped out of my seat in the cinema. I also have to admit that this is the first movie to give me nightmares as an adult - I actually woke up crying ha ha yet I continue to watch it but to be honest it stopped scaring me the second I realised that the demon is actually Darth Maul.
1408
Its John Cusack for a whole movie!! I don't need to say anymore.
