My ever present stalker gene, seems to be really paying off lately!
The most recent, delightful result, being the discovery of this absolute belter.
Further Ed, is a laugh out loud funny, wonderfully colourful and refreshingly crass, piece of British cinema, that tells the story of two university students who decide to make their own LSD - its every bit as ridiculous as it sounds, but the premise alone gives it bucket loads of character.
Written, directed by and starring, my latest stalkee (is that even a word?) George Webster.
I first spotted him in Tripped, an odd little E4 mini series, co starring Blake Harrison - I think I may have been only one of around 7 people that actually watched it, which is a CRYING SHAME. Go and watch it on All 4 - you won't regret it.
Anyway, I ascertained that after around 4 years of blood, sweat, tears and Idiegogo 'Further Ed' has finally been released on Amazon Instant Video and the bonus is if you're a Prime member, its free :-)
People tend to describe movies as laugh out loud funny when I'm pretty sure not one noise was actually made when watching, its a phrase that is bandied about far too liberally for my liking but I was genuinely cracking up, out loud, all by myself, so much so that a head popped through the bannister at certain points, to see if I was OK.
I think what made it funnier, to me, was that it was so relatable, (even though I've never made my own LSD, obvs) the interactions between the main characters and the words used etc. Could literally be me and my friends talking to each other. Its British humour at its best, with foul language, full frontal nudity and sex jokes.
You'll notice that against trend, I haven't named the post using a quote from the film and that's because there are so many one liners, that I couldn't possibly choose!! That's what we're dealing with here.
I don't really know what this says about me, but when the first C bomb was dropped, it felt like I was home, especially in the context it was used - I was oddly proud of the film makers for using it. I LOVE that word, as long as its not being snarled at me through gritted teeth.
The use of narration and bursts of hilarious animation, make the story easy and fun to follow, its pure entertainment as long as you're not easily offended, but even then, there's not really much to offend if I'm honest, its just a really funny way to spend 90 minutes.
Its essentially a buddy movie - the live wire and the moral compass collide and hilarity ensues. Its a tried and tested formula that works and this is no exception, they were both outstanding and riotously funny to watch. As were the rest of the cast.
Yes, you can obviously tell it was made for about a fiver but that is a massive part of its charm - you can tell these people came together, with a shoe string budget and a wonderful idea and made this film, purely for the love of it.
Please take the time to watch it and appreciate it for what it is - the manifestation of a twenty somethings dream that also happens to be fucking hilarious. Bonus.
