Incestuous finger sniffing and unnecessary bovine disembowelment aside, I thought this film was an absolute corker, if you also ignore the Swiss Cheese plot.
A Cure For Wellness, is a 2016 psychological horror film, written by Justin Hythe and directed by Oscar winner and pirate botherer, Gore Verbinski.
The film stars an oddly cast (or so I thought) Dane DeHaan as the main protagonist, sent to a sanitarium in the Swiss Alps, to bring back his company CEO.
Sinister occurrences and poorly times coincidences, culminate in our central character being admitted as a patient, and slowly uncovering the skullduggery that is afoot, in this seemingly calm and peaceful spa resort/urban legend riddled, hell hole.
As previously stated, the plot had so many holes in it that I was genuinely concerned about being sucked into the screen, but do you know what? I literally couldn't give a shit. It was without a doubt, one of the most beautifully shot films I have EVER seen.
It was haunting and grim and clinically sparse, everything psychological horror should be, but interspersed with dreamy underwater shots and breathtaking sweeping shots of beautiful European landscape. It had that Wes Anderson feel that I love so much. Absolutely mesmerising.
I could have carried on watching it for hours, for the cinematorgraphy alone - the ridiculous story was just a side note in my eyes and I can tell you now, it is so stupid and really far fetched, even for a horror film.
There were moments where I winced so badly, I may have fractured a rib and also moments where I was so disgusted, I felt like my skin was about to walk off my body - which in my opinion is the desired effect of a horror film, is it not?
The script was a little bit lazy in places and the score was quite jarring at times as was the editing, but all is forgiven because its so bloody gorgeous to look at!
I have to say, that when I first saw Dane DeHaan on screen I had many questions about the decision to cast him but as the film unfolds, it becomes clear that he was the right man for the job and he was faultless in my opinion.
DD is accompanied by Mrs Shia LaBeouf herself, Mia Goth. She is so beautiful and so peculiar, its a perfect combination for the innocent and curios character she played.
The supporting cast including Celia Imrie and a never to be seen in the same light ever again, Jason Isaacs, were fantastic.
I know most if this post is non-sensical rambling but what I'm trying to say is that even though the plot is shitty, I still think that fans of the art of film making should see this in the cinema in all its glory, to truly appreciate it.
Everyone else should watch it anyway but don't say I didn't warn you - its an 18 for a reason.
