For the first time probably ever, I was a bit paranoid about going to the cinema on my own and looking like a giant loser, simply because of the film I was going to see.
Turns out, within about 5 minutes, I was laughing so much I didn't care.
Power Rangers has actually seen quite a mixture of reviews, good and bad, and I will say that there are some cringey elements but then, isn't that exactly why we all loved the TV show so much?? It's a prime example of something being so bad its good.
Even though that's not really applicable here, because the film is well made, well acted, funny and so full of heart, it will make you burst.
It draws from the TV series so well that if you can look past that fact its not an Oscar winning masterpiece and lose yourself in the silliness, you will have a good time.
It doesn't matter who you are, this film will be fun for you.
The film focuses on the origins of the Rangers and their first bad guy (woman in this case) battle, so its quite clear that there is a franchise in the works and I really hope there is!
From the very start, there is thinly veiled and really stupid adult humour that had me laughing out loud and I didn't really stop if i'm honest - only when I was choking on the wonderful nostalgia - I actually cried when they played a ten second snippet of the original song. I'm not even sorry.
The cast is so diverse, black/white/pink/yellow/brown/gay/straight/girl/boy, it drew some attention and criticism for being too obvious and purposely done - well of course it was!!!???? How do you do that without a passing thought to not exclude anyone?
I was particularly struck by the Blue Ranger who also happens to be black and HILARIOUS, talking about his autism and so matter-of-factly talking about how it affects his every day life, but it being handled in such a refreshing way - no sad music and no melancholy atmosphere - which is how it should be, its a fact of life for so many people every day, its not a tragedy, although I have seen first hand how challenging and heartbreaking it can be, its certainly not something to draw sadness from. He stole the entire film and my heart.
The CGI was first class, even if it was cheesy and obvious, the story line was predictable but I DON'T CARE! Excellent soundtrack as well.
There were lots of familiar faces and even some Transformers humour! Bryan Cranston and my beloved Bill Hader loaned their voices to 'Zordon' and 'Alpha 5' respectively and did a good solid job. Even as a teeny little robot Bill Hader had me in stitches and Elizabeth Banks hamming it up as 'Rita Repulsa' was just delightfully bad!
The bottom line here is that everyone, no matter how old you are, should go and see it and laugh, smile and cry for 2 hours. If you are of my generation, then take your children to see it and teach them about our completely Marvel-Cinematic-Universe-less 90's lives. They need to know how lucky they are.
