It would seem that when it comes to this movie, no one knows their arse from their collective elbow.
I mean that in the sense that there seems to be no unified, definite, decision on whether its good or bad.
I say, its a cinematic masterpiece - visually, at least.
The things we can do with CGI and SFX now, just blow my mind. It overwhelms me to the point of tears, that people without actual magical powers, can make something so beautiful.
I think the issue here, is that the original anime/manga holds such a huge place in so many peoples hearts, it automatically got a ginormous push back from such a large amount of people. It didn't start with a fighting chance, lets just put it that way.
Ghost In The Shell, is a 2017 science fiction/action movie starring Scarlett Johansson, Juliette Binoche and Michael Pitt.
Adapted from the Japanese manga of the same name we are given a glimpse of Major's origin story and the realisation of her existence, whilst engaging in the obligatory good vs evil battle.
I will say that the story itself was very weak and the script was simple, but then who needs to listen to people talking in riddles when there is so much to look at? And I don't just mean SJ in her skin tight rubber suit.
My semi kiwi friend, told me that it was all filmed in Wellington New Zealand, I was there less than 6 months ago, so I was very excited to see some of my favourite places. How very naive of me ha ha the whole film was just one big dystopian, futuristic, oriental blur but a starkly beautiful, well thought out blur - the level of detail and the action/fight sequences in it were immense.
All performances were flawless, no one made me wince or groan. SJ is a bona fide action hero and (ignoring the white washing) I can't think of anyone else who would have done a better job, to be fair. The supporting cast were all amazing, especially Pilou Asbaek (Euron Greyjoy - if you're GOT inclined) he's such a beast of a man and even with is artificial night vision goggles surgically implanted in his face, he managed to appear gentle and empathetic, when necessary.
I have stopped researching films until I've seen them now, so as not to sully my opinion with other peoples negativity, so Michael Pitt's surprise appearance was a definite highlight for me and I'm hoping this is an indication of his return to mainstream cinema, where he truly belongs. If I'm honest with myself, then I will admit that they chose him simply because he looks remarkably similar facially, to SJ (you'll see why that's necessary when you see the film) but in my head its because he absolutely nailed the subtle movements and the fractured dialogue, necessary to portray a robot that looks like its been chewed on and spat out.
I think maybe the fact that I watched this in IMAX probably helped me fall so helplessly in love with it - I wasn't looking further than the heart stirring CGI and Michael Pitt's beautiful, half mangled face. So if it is terrible I didn't notice or care for that matter.
There was nothing that made me immediately say 'That was a piece of shit' lets put it that way and it won't be everyone's cup of tea I'm sure.
However, it should be seen on the big screen, in IMAX and if you don't get even a hint of tingle on your spine then you are dead inside or at least creatively stunted.
