This film can be viewed one of two ways.
1. A bright shiney sparkly space age love story, with a happy ending
Or
2. A creepy as fuck tale about the true meaning of Stockholm Syndrome
I choose option 1, becasue I'm not a miserable bastard.
I really enjoyed this film, it didn't set me alight at all, but it was a good way to spend two hours and it was a lovely shining beacon of CGI deliciousness.
Passengers, is an american sci-fi adventure film starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, set on board a super luxurious starship, carrying 5000 hibernating passengers bound for a new planet 120 years from earth. We are told the story from the point of view of two passengers woken from hibernation 90 years too early.
On the surface of it, this film is satisfactory. It's an adequately made, adequately acted movie, that serves its purpose as entertainment and nothing more. There's all the elements a movie goer could wish for, action, romance, comedy, tears etc etc.
If we were to sit here all day, I could tear it a new one for SOOOO many things, but I liked it and Chris Pratt is so beautiful, I could never slag anything off that he's even remotely a part of.
I actually dont have much to say on the subject to be honest, because if we were to start scratching the surface here, we would start to reveal the sinister and quite honestly, horrifying story that runs beneath the surface, like the coal fires of Centralia (Google it) and I dont fancy going there and ruining a perfectly good film for perfectly nice people.
The film starts as a bit of a two hander between a stranded Chris Pratt and an android version of Martin Sheen, who make a lovely duo with good chemistry, so good in fact, I almost didnt want Jennifer Lawrence to come along and ruin it with her bouncy hair and perfect skin.
She did come along, with her bouncy hair and perfect skin, but she didnt ruin it at all - lets face it, she never does, does she?
Script was average, but served its purpose, the story was imaginative but highly superficial, acting was solid and enjoyable, costume, make up, score etc all satisfactory. Set design and CGI was out of this world; this was a beautiful film to watch that cannot be denied.
The ending annoyed me a bit; I would have liked a bit more detail.
I may do another post on the properly fucked up nature of this story, but for now I will say, go and watch this film, its sufficient if all you crave is two hours away from the world outside, to smile, laugh and maybe even cry for a bit.
