I'm just going to get my overall verdict out of the way right off the bat - this movie is average.
If you've seen one Saw movie, you've seen them all.
This installment, the 8th to be exact, of the Saw franchise, just continues to prove that what James Wan and Leigh Whannell started in 2003, can basically be picked up by anyone and still churn out an acceptable movie. Everyone, except the three producers and the composer (OBVIOUSLY) were completely new to these movies and you literally cannot tell. At all.
Oddly enough, I wasn't scared once or creeped out, or grossed out. In fact, the movie was only saved by the trademark summation, with that oh so familiar swelling score and that wonderful door slamming homage to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It still made me beam and I ultimately left the cinema satisfied. Although that may be because I have an unlimited card and hadn't just paid 10 or 11 quid for it. I think I would have been livid if I had.
Because this movie is nothing new, there's not really much I can get excited about - everything was painfully average, script, acting, effects blah blah blah but that doesn't mean any of it was bad. My only complaint was that it was relatively tame, gore wise. That might say a more about me as a person than the actual movie, though.
The story is samey - we all know John Kramer has been dead for 10 years but this movie makes us question it and as usual there is a twist ending that I actually didn't figure out, for once. I sometimes hate the fact that my generation are effectively the founders of the modern day twist ending, because we are now inherently suspicious of everything and we know that what we are being shown is usually not all it seems to be, so we can't watch anything like normal people but then on the other hand, we got to see The Usual Suspects and The Sixth Sense before the internet could spoil it for us. It's a double edged sword, that's for sure.
I'm just waffling now but my point is, don't bother wasting your money on a cinema trip, just wait for the DVD or even TV or maybe just don't even bother - I can't even tell you what happened past probably the third movie, I haven't even seen Saw 7 and I couldn't give less of a shit.
